## [Friday, October 30, 2026](2026/10/30.md)

### [BonBon: 0.6.35, the scrollbar's space reserved](2026/10/30/120006.md)

- What Dave does
	- 1\. Run BonBon 0.6.35 from forDave/BonBon-0.6.35.zip.
	- 2\. Step between a short post and a long one.
		- The column and the arrows stay put; the scrollbar's space is reserved whether or not the page scrolls.
- What happened
	- 1\. One line of CSS, the fix GitHub and Twitter use.
		- On a Mac with overlay scrollbars nothing changes, since they take no space.
	- 2\. Still on the list: 9, the .well-known talk, for the wrap-up; 19, the menus, Dave is thinking.

### [BonBon: 0.6.34, the date as the headline, arrows fixed](2026/10/30/120005.md)

- What Dave does
	- 1\. Run BonBon 0.6.34 from forDave/BonBon-0.6.34.zip.
	- 2\. Open an untitled post, https://dave.writersweb.org/2026/10/30/a202937.md.
		- The date is the headline, "Friday, October 30, 2026", and under it "By Dave Winer at 4:29 PM."
	- 3\. Open a titled post and a day page.
		- Same shape at the top: one big thing, one quiet thing, the arrows at the right.
	- 4\. Step from post to post with the arrows.
		- They stay the same size and in the same spot.
- What happened
	- 1\. The arrows are one fixed size now, no longer a fraction of the headline's size.
	- 2\. One thing that still moves the whole page, arrows included, by the width of a scrollbar: a post short enough not to scroll has no scrollbar, so the column is a few pixels to the right.
		- That's the browser's scrollbar, not the arrows. Dave decides whether it matters.
	- 3\. Still on the list: 9, the .well-known talk, for the wrap-up; 19, the menus, Dave is thinking.

### [BonBon: 0.6.33, byline flush left, arrows on the title line](2026/10/30/120004.md)

- What Dave does
	- 1\. Run BonBon 0.6.33 from forDave/BonBon-0.6.33.zip.
	- 2\. Open https://dave.writersweb.org/2026/10/29/143258.md.
		- The byline starts where the title and the text start. The arrows are on the title line, at its right edge.
	- 3\. Open an untitled post, https://dave.writersweb.org/2026/10/30/a202937.md.
		- With no title line, the arrows stay at the right end of the byline row.
- What happened
	- 1\. The byline was indented by a rule in the old Bootstrap stylesheet that grabs any element whose class name contains "span".
		- Reset, the way the other such cases were.
	- 2\. Still on the list: 9, the .well-known talk, for the wrap-up; 19, the menus, Dave is thinking.

### [BonBon: 0.6.32, the page header, the link fix](2026/10/30/120003.md)

- What Dave does
	- 1\. Run BonBon 0.6.32 from forDave/BonBon-0.6.32.zip.
	- 2\. Open https://dave.writersweb.org/2026/10/29/143258.md.
		- The title comes first, left aligned, plain text, no link. Under it the byline, small, in the app's font, with the arrows at the right end of that row.
	- 3\. Open a day page, https://dave.writersweb.org/2026/10/29.md.
		- The arrows are in the same spot, in a row of their own under the title.
	- 4\. Dave said about the arrows' spot: put it somewhere, if it's wrong we'll see.
		- This is the somewhere.
- What happened
	- 1\. The link bug is fixed in the generator.
		- No post on the site has a link to scripting.com in its front matter any more; this month's files were rewritten.
	- 2\. The dotted boxes in Dave's screenshot are the dev outline he keeps on; they weren't touched.
	- 3\. Still on the list: 9, the .well-known talk, and 19, merging bookmarks and history into the three-dot menu, for later.

### [BonBon: 0.6.31, the feed, the rest of the list](2026/10/30/120002.md)

- What Dave does
	- 1\. Run BonBon 0.6.31 from forDave/BonBon-0.6.31.zip.
	- 2\. Subscribe to https://dave.writersweb.org/rss.xml and https://brent.writersweb.org/rss.xml in a feed reader.
		- Each item has the HTML and the post's Markdown, and links to the post's Markdown page.
	- 3\. On a results page, click the magnifying glass: it puts you in the page's own box, no bar drops down.
	- 4\. Look at the right end of the address bar: more room after the three dots, the icons a pixel closer.
	- 5\. The search box, button and count line are in the app's font now, and the box sits five pixels higher.
	- 6\. Open https://dave.writersweb.org/index.opml.
		- The XML is colored and long lines scroll sideways instead of wrapping.
- What happened
	- 1\. The feed is rendered by daverss, as Dave asked.
		- The newest 50 posts, scripting.com's count. It's written only when a post changed, so the file's date means something.
	- 2\. The sweep for serif where sans serif belongs found nothing else.
		- Every piece of the chrome was already in the app's font.
	- 3\. The coloring is highlight.js, the package, not our own code.
	- 4\. Nothing points at the feed yet.
		- That pointer is part of the .well-known discussion, item 9, which Dave said not yet.
	- 5\. Found on the way, not fixed, item 18: since yesterday's generator, Dave's new posts carry a link to their scripting.com page in the front matter, so a titled post's title in BonBon links to scripting.com instead of being plain.
		- Only this month's files have it. Dave decides.
	- 6\. rss.chat's editor checks out as the editor for this CMS: its feed carries the Markdown, titles are optional, edits republish the feed.

### [BonBon: 0.6.30, the list, Daytona's search page top](2026/10/30/120001.md)

- What Dave does
	- 1\. Run BonBon 0.6.30 from forDave/BonBon-0.6.30.zip.
	- 2\. Search for "wordle kitty" on dave.writersweb.org.
		- The top of the page is Daytona's: the box with the search in it, the cursor at the end, a Search button, and the count under them in small text.
	- 3\. The pictures in the results draw as they do on a post page, centered with the caption under them, and the # link sits after the caption.
	- 4\. Click in the address bar once: the whole address is selected.
		- Click again to place the cursor.
	- 5\. The icons at the right of the address bar are now the size and spacing of the ones at the left.
	- 6\. Open https://dave.writersweb.org/index.opml in Chrome: it comes back as XML now, not PagePark's HTML page.
		- BonBon shows it as XML too.
- What happened
	- 1\. Item 1 was a PagePark setting after all, one line in the site's config.json on marin.
		- No restart was needed.
	- 2\. Item 2 had worked since the source view of 10/27; it was checked and marked done.
	- 3\. Item 10: the results page puts a # link after every paragraph, pictures included.
		- BonBon saw an image followed by text, its rule for a margin image, and floated the picture right. Per Dave, the picture rule now allows a # at the end. The generator's highlight also leaves picture captions alone.
	- 4\. Item 11: the search box moved from the bar beside the page to the top of the results page.
		- The magnifying glass keeps doing what it did.
	- 5\. The generator is 0.5.19 on both watchers.
	- 6\. Still on the list: item 9, revisit .well-known before release.

### [BonBon: 0.6.29, search the Daytona way, the arrows, the flash](2026/10/30/120000.md)

- What Dave does
	- 1\. Run forDave/BonBon-0.6.29.zip.
	- 2\. Search for a word.
		- Each hit now shows the post under its day, the day linking to the day page and the title to the post. An untitled post shows whole; a titled post shows only the paragraphs with the word. The word is shown as code, Markdown's highlight.
	- 3\. The search bar opens by itself on a results page with the word in it, selected.
		- Type the next word and press Return. Escape closes it; leaving the results closes it.
	- 4\. Best matches come first, then newest, Daytona's order, using SQLite's full-text search.
	- 5\. Go left and right between days.
		- The old page stays until the new one is ready, then a clear and the new page right behind it. Dave said we'd review this.
	- 6\. Look at the arrows on a title line.
		- They were sitting low; now they're centered on the line.
- Notes
	- 7\. Daytona 2's code in blogBase was the model: the heading, the paragraphs shown, the count line "N docs match "word.""
	- 8\. Both watchers on marin have the new generator.
		- The index was rebuilt as full-text on the first start.
	- 9\. Still on the list: select-all when clicking in the address bar, the icons either side of the address bar matching, and the .well-known revisit before release.

## [Thursday, October 29, 2026](2026/10/29.md)

### [BonBon: 0.6.28, search](2026/10/29/120003.md)

- What Dave does
	- 1\. Run forDave/BonBon-0.6.28.zip.
	- 2\. Go to dave.writersweb.org or brent.writersweb.org and type a word in the address bar, for example columbo, then Return.
		- A results page comes up, newest first. Back goes back to where you were.
	- 3\. Or click the magnifying glass in the address bar, next to the stylesheet button.
		- A bar opens like Find's; type the word, Return.
	- 4\. Put quotes around a word to find exactly that word.
		- Without quotes, program also finds programming. Two words without quotes finds posts with both.
	- 5\. The results page shows the newest 100 hits and says how many there were.
- What's there
	- 6\. The search program runs beside each watcher on marin: build.writersweb.org/search for Dave's site, buildbrent.writersweb.org/search for Brent's.
		- The results page is a Markdown page at that address, so it can be bookmarked.
	- 7\. The index is a SQLite file beside the watcher, one row per post, filled after every build.
		- Dave's site has 16,775 posts in it, Brent's 4,501. No ping; the watcher already knows when a post changes.
	- 8\. The site tells BonBon where its search is through a new line in toc.opml, urlSearch.
		- Only sites with a watcher have one; on any other site the magnifying glass is dim and a word in the address bar is tried as an address, as before.
	- 9\. Not in this build: the arrows not centered on the title line, and the flash when going left or right.
		- Both are on the to-do list.

### [BonBon: 0.6.27, Brent's watcher, and the Daytona read](2026/10/29/120002.md)

- What Dave does
	- 1\. Run forDave/BonBon-0.6.27.zip.
	- 2\. Open any day page on dave.writersweb.org.
		- The arrows are at the end of the title, centered with it, and the title and arrows center together as one line.
	- 3\. Open https://brent.writersweb.org/2026/08/14/james-dempseys-breakpoints-jam.md.
		- The title is a link to xcoders.org, the way it is on his site.
	- 4\. Hover over a link and look at the lower left corner.
		- Say if the box is there in this copy.
- BonBon 0.6.27
	- 5\. The arrows sit at the end of the title's text, vertically centered on it.
		- On a page with no title they sit at the end of the dateline.
	- 6\. A link post's title is a link to where the post points.
		- Clicking it shows the HTML page as source, as expected.
	- 7\. The hover box is as it was in 0.6.25 and 0.6.26.
- Brent's site, the watcher
	- 8\. buildbrent.writersweb.org is running on marin.
		- It hears about Brent's feed from feedland.social the moment a post is new or changed, and reads the feed every 15 minutes as a backstop, with the reallysimple package.
	- 9\. A new or changed post becomes a file in his own format in the posts folder, and the site is rebuilt.
		- Only files that changed are written.
	- 10\. It has the same update socket as Dave's watcher, on port 1624, so a page open in BonBon refreshes when a build touches it.
	- 11\. The site was rebuilt by it today.
		- Link posts carry their link; the old posts' code samples keep their line breaks now.
	- 12\. Dave's watcher is unchanged.
- Daytona, read for the search drill
	- 13\. The source is in the private GitHub repo scripting/daytona, version 0.4.11, last touched January 2022.
		- The Dropbox copies are empty placeholders.
	- 14\. It's a Node app on MySQL with one table: one row per story, with the story's outline as JSON and a text column holding every line's words for searching.
	- 15\. Indexing is by ping: send it an outline's address, it walks the outline for stories and adds or updates a row for each.
	- 16\. A query is a substring match on the text column, newest first.
		- No ranking, no full-text index. Results are cached for an hour and every query is logged.
	- 17\. The client shows the hits as one outline with the query highlighted, and keeps a history of queries.
	- 18\. What carries over for Daytona 3: one row per post with a text column, newest-first results, the query log, and the idea that the thing that builds the site tells the index when a post changes.
	- 19\. What changes: the source is Markdown files, results come back as a Markdown page, and the match should be better than a substring, which is a question for the drill.

### [BonBon: 0.6.26: the pad is out, left and right are back](2026/10/29/120001.md)

- What Dave does
	- 1\. Use forDave/BonBon-0.6.26.zip instead of 0.6.25.
- What changed
	- 1\. The arrow pad is gone.
		- The left and right arrows are back beside the title, previous and next only, as before.
	- 2\. The hover box stays: a link's address in the lower left corner while the mouse is over it.
	- 3\. The generator still writes urlParent and urlFirstChild in the front matter, room for other products.
		- BonBon ignores them.

### [BonBon: The arrow pad and the hover box, 0.6.25](2026/10/29/120000.md)

- What Dave does
	- 1\. Unzip forDave/BonBon-0.6.25.zip and run it from the tmp folder as usual.
	- 2\. Open https://dave.writersweb.org/ and use the arrow pad for a while.
		- Dave said he'd form an opinion by using it.
	- 3\. Hover over any link and look at the lower left corner.
- The arrow pad, BonBon 0.6.25
	- 1\. A dark box near the upper right of the window with four arrows in a cross, Drummer's look.
	- 2\. Left and right go to the previous and next page at the same level: day to day, month to month, post to post.
	- 3\. Up goes to the parent: a post's day, a day's month, a month's home page.
	- 4\. Down goes to the first child: home to the newest month, a month to its newest day, a day to its first post.
	- 5\. An arrow with nowhere to go is gray, not hidden.
		- On the home page only down is live.
	- 6\. The pad is there whenever the page has somewhere to go and absent when it doesn't.
		- There is no command to show or hide it.
	- 7\. The two arrows that were in the page header are gone; the pad took their place.
	- 8\. Cmd-click on an arrow opens that page in a new tab, like any link.
- The hover box
	- 1\. When the mouse is over a link, its address shows in a small box in the lower left corner, Chrome's way.
	- 2\. The box goes away when the mouse leaves the link.
	- 3\. It works for links in the page, in the bookmarks bar and on the arrow pad.
- The generator, 0.5.15
	- 1\. Two new front matter fields, Dave's names: urlParent and urlFirstChild, beside urlPrev and urlNext.
	- 2\. Deployed to marin and the whole site rebuilt there, so every page on dave.writersweb.org has them now.
	- 3\. brent.writersweb.org was built with the older generator, so it shows no pad until it's rebuilt.
		- Dave said to leave it as is.
- Things to know
	- 1\. The pad sits over the right edge of the text column when the window is narrow.
		- Drummer's does the same.
	- 2\. Getting to 2017 is still one step at a time.
		- Dave said that's a feature of the web, not our problem.
	- 3\. The list now has three items: OPML served as XML on dave.writersweb.org, BonBon rendering OPML as XML, and browsing a site with .md twins beside .html files.

## [Tuesday, October 27, 2026](2026/10/27.md)

### [BonBon: Stylesheets and HTML source pages, 0.6.23](2026/10/27/120001.md)

- What works now
	- 1\. BonBon 0.6.23 is in forDave.
		- Quit the copy in tmp, unzip the new one, and launch it.
	- 2\. The five stylesheets are in: Newsprint, Reader, Classic, Mono and Book, as they came from the design session.
	- 3\. An A button in the address bar, left of the three dots, opens a row of pills.
		- Click one and the page changes right there. The choice sticks across tabs and launches. Reader is the default.
	- 4\. The stylesheets live in a folder called stylesheets in the data folder, with the fonts beside them.
		- Edit one, add one or rename one and the panel sees it the next time it opens. Reload reads an edited stylesheet again.
	- 5\. A link to an HTML page shows the page's source as text in the tab, with the page's title on the tab, the way Chrome shows a Markdown file.
		- Tested on scripting.com.
- What I did about the five observations
	- 1\. The color-mix calls are gone, replaced with plain colors, so the shaded code blocks show in BonBon's Chromium.
	- 2\. The four web fonts are bundled in the app, so the pages work offline and Google never hears from BonBon.
	- 3\. The page is built the way the stylesheets expect: a column with the title as a heading, then the Markdown.
	- 4\. The chrome stays light when a stylesheet goes dark with the OS.
		- Left as is.
	- 5\. Mono's lists, tables and code blocks are untested, as the readme said.
		- Left as is.
- Things to know
	- 1\. The old Georgia look is gone; Classic is the nearest of the five.
	- 2\. The 550 pixel cap on inline pictures went with it.
		- The stylesheets size pictures now.
	- 3\. The HEAD request isn't a separate request.
		- The GET that fetches the page already tells BonBon the content type, so that answer is used.
	- 4\. The order in the panel is alphabetical, from the file names.

### [BonBon: 0.6.24 and brent.writersweb.org](2026/10/27/120000.md)

- What works now
	- 1\. BonBon 0.6.24 is in forDave.
		- Quit the copy in tmp, unzip, launch.
	- 2\. brent.writersweb.org is up.
		- Open https://brent.writersweb.org/index.md in BonBon. 4,501 posts from 1999 to September 2026, with day pages, month pages, the arrows and the calendar outline, same as Dave's site.
	- 3\. The stylesheets panel closes when a pill is clicked.
	- 4\. Reader is now Basic, so the default is first in the panel.
		- An old reader.css in the data folder is renamed once, so there's only one.
	- 5\. A link to an HTML page or to an XML file, RSS, OPML, any XML, shows the text the full width of the window from the upper left, in the stylesheet's code font.
	- 6\. A link to a gif, png or jpeg shows the picture alone, centered, shrunk to fit when it's bigger than the window.
- Brent's site, things to know
	- 1\. The old HTML posts, 1999 to 2008, were converted to Markdown.
		- Code samples in some of them came out on one line where his HTML had line breaks inside the code. Readable, not pretty.
	- 2\. Links to his own posts go to the new site.
		- Links to his pictures and his other pages still go to inessential.com.
	- 3\. One file was skipped: a post from July 16, 2003 with no title and no file name, half a post.
		- Everything else is in.
	- 4\. The 810 posts he marks as link posts look like any titled post.
		- That's what his own template does with them too.
	- 5\. The domain already pointed at marin, so nothing to do there.
	- 6\. The build is a script in the generator folder, with its own settings file.
		- Run it again and copy the folder to marin and the site is rebuilt.
- Left as is
	- 1\. The pills are alphabetical: Basic, Book, Classic, Mono, Newsprint.
	- 2\. The chrome stays light when a stylesheet goes dark with the OS.
	- 3\. Other file types, PDF for one, still get the broken-link icon.

## [Monday, October 26, 2026](2026/10/26.md)

### [BonBon: day, month and home pages for the Markdown site](2026/10/26/120001.md)

- What Dave does next
	- 1\. Look at the pages in BonBon.
		- They are served from this Mac while this session is up: http://localhost:8766/index.md is the home page, http://localhost:8766/2024/03/index.md is March 2024, http://localhost:8766/2024/03/31.md is one day.
	- 2\. Say whether to put it on the live site.
		- The build replaces the index.md Dave wrote by hand at dave.writersweb.org, and deletes every links.md there. Nothing has been copied up.
- What was built
	- 1\. The generator, opmlToMarkdown, is at 0.5.12.
		- BonBon itself didn't change.
	- 2\. A day page for every day with posts, like 2024/03/31.md.
		- Every post of the day in full, in the order of the outline. The title is the date; the arrows go to the day before and after.
	- 3\. A month page for every month, like 2024/03/index.md.
		- Every day of the month, newest first, under a heading that links to the day page. The arrows go to the month before and after.
	- 4\. The home page, index.md at the root, the last 25 days.
		- The number is maxDaysOnHomePage in config.json, oldSchool's name and default.
	- 5\. On every page a titled post is a heading linking to its own file, and an untitled post is its paragraph with a # after it linking to its own file, the way scripting.com does it.
	- 6\. The month page replaces links.md.
		- The build deleted the 114 old ones, and toc.opml now points each month at its month page.
	- 7\. The watcher keeps writing only the current month, so day and month pages of older months are made once by the full build.
		- Going live needs one full build on marin after the app is copied up.
	- 8\. First full build: 3412 day pages, 114 month pages, one home page, 44 seconds including the trip to GitHub.
- Checked in the app
	- 1\. Loaded the home page, a month page and a day page in BonBon and read the result: titles, arrows, day links, post links, margin images floating, pictures alone left alone, the # links all pointing at real files.
	- 2\. Not checked by eye: screenshots need the approval card Dave wasn't here to click.
- Open
	- 1\. The order within a day for a site with no outline, inessential.com next: untitled posts first, newest first, then titled ones.
		- Written down, not built; nothing needs it yet.
	- 2\. Days in toc.opml still link to the day's top post.
		- They could link to the day page now. Dave hasn't ruled.

### [BonBon: live reload over a websocket from the watcher](2026/10/26/120000.md)

- What works now
	- 1\. When a page on dave.writersweb.org is rebuilt, a BonBon tab showing it reloads by itself, and stays where Dave was reading.
	- 2\. It is live on marin and connected from BonBon 0.6.22.
		- A real reload on the live site hasn't been seen yet; that happens the next time Dave posts.
- What Dave does
	- 1\. Relaunch BonBon from the 0.6.22 code.
		- A copy launched before today reads the site's table of contents once and never sees the socket.
	- 2\. Post something, with the home page open in BonBon, and watch it change.
- How it works
	- 1\. The watcher runs a websocket on port 1623, Dave's choice, next to wpIdentity's 1622.
	- 2\. toc.opml's head names it: urlUpdateSocket, Drummer's name for the same thing.
	- 3\. A tab sends watch and the page's address.
		- When a build writes that page, the watcher sends update and the address, and the tab fetches the page again. Name only, not the file.
	- 4\. One socket per tab.
		- It closes when the tab leaves the page or closes, and reopens 30 seconds after a drop.
	- 5\. On marin, Caddy passes websocket connections for build.writersweb.org straight to 1623, because PagePark can't pass them through.
		- One block added to the Caddyfile, backed up first, validated before reload.
- One thing to know
	- 1\. Caddy took the new config and everything is served, but systemd still shows the Caddy service as reloading.
		- The reload command timed out waiting for Caddy's admin endpoint. Nothing is broken. CC did not restart Caddy.
- Tested
	- 1\. Locally, end to end: a spoiled home page, a ping to the watcher, the tab reloaded the fixed page by itself at the same scroll position.
	- 2\. On marin: a socket from this Mac through Caddy reached the watcher, and the BonBon tab on the live home page holds one open.
